John Baird Recognizes Environmental Achievement of Star Motors of Ottawa

(Ottawa) – John Baird, Member of Parliament for the riding of Ottawa West-Nepean, today recognized the good environmental work of Star Motors of Ottawa. Mr. Baird, also the federal Minister of the Environment, presented an award to Jeff Mierins, dealer principal of Star Motors, for his company’s environmental leadership.

“This is another great example of people taking the initiative to help reduce air pollutants and greenhouse gases,” said Mr. Baird. “Not only does it make sense from an environmental and health standpoint, but it also shows commitment to our community.”

“At Star Motors we have not only reduced our greenhouse gases, including volatile organic compounds, we have changed the way we do business,” said Mr. Mierins. “We are also informing our associates how they can reduce their own carbon footprint, with 110 body shops and collisions repair facilities in Ottawa alone, the benefits of using waterborne paint are incredible.”

The federal government is scheduled to introduce mandatory limits Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in automotive refinishing coatings as early as January 2009. VOCs are found in the solvents used to mix paint for automotive refinishing and are precursors to particulate matter and ozone that contribute to climate-change and smog. New waterborne technology being used at Star Motors will reduce the amount of VOCs released in to the air by 40-50 percent.

“VOC reduction will go a long way to help reduce pollution and smog days. I commend Star Motors of Ottawa for acting ahead of taking the initiative to provide their service in an eco-friendly manner,” added Mr. Baird.
