Sears Launches Power-Pipe® – Offering Consumers Option to
Lower Home Water Heating by up to 40%
Ottawa, Ontario - May 7, 2008: Today, RenewABILITY Energy announced that Sears Home Services launched the first ever national Drain Water Heat Recovery (DWHR) Installation Program with Sears Canada’s President and CEO Dene Rogers. They were joined at Sears’ Carlingwood store by Canada’s Environment Minister, and Ottawa-area Member of Parliament, John Baird.
“At 20-30% of home energy consumption water heating is the second largest energy demand in homes,” said Gerald Van Decker, RenewABILITY Energy, President and CEO. “While many consumers are currently unaware of drain water heat recovery, it is a significant way to reduce home energy costs and cuts water heating bills by up to 40%. As a result the Power-Pipe can have a significant impact on home energy consumption.
The Power-Pipe works by using outgoing warm drain water to heat incoming cold fresh water in homes thereby reducing home water heating costs. The result is your water heater doesn’t have to work as hard.
“Providing professionally installed home energy-efficient products is a key component of our Home Services offering,” said Mr. Rogers. “We want to help customers find environmentally beneficial alternatives that also help them save money. The Power-Pipe is a great example.”
The Power-Pipe’s performance has been independently verified by CANMET – Natural Resources Canada. In a July 2007 study the Power-Pipe was reported to be the most efficient unit on the market while imposing no noticeable pressure loss on home water supply. Additionally, the Power-Pipe is code approved for drinking water, requires no maintenance, has no moving parts, increases effective hot water capacity, extends water heater life, and can be used with any type of plumbing system. More importantly the technology is proven, practical, and affordable, and in use today.
Additionally, using a Power-Pipe reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to one ton/year per household in the average family of four. While is works great with any other water heating system it will save about two-thirds as much as a solar water heating system at a fraction of the cost. It also works extremely well with Tankless water heaters though with the energy savings and cost considered, the Power-Pipe will typically pay for itself much quicker.
Sears Home Services will be selling three different Power-Pipe models. Home owners typically pay between $900 and $1200 to have a Power-Pipe installed in their homes. Interested home owners can call Sears 1-800-4-My HOME or 1-800-Le FOYER for information in English and French, respectively.
The Federal ecoENERGY program offers an incentive of $130 for the longer Power-Pipe with matched funds from several provinces. Also, several utilities, such as Union Gas, have programs with incentives that range from $150 to $400 dollars.
The Power-Pipe’s versatile design has also enabled us to also successfully deploy it for multi-residential, commercial and industrial applications.
