Baird and Poilievre tell Students to Keep their Receipts
Local MP's remind students about new textbook tax credit

Ottawa - Local Member's of Parliament, John Baird (Ottawa West-Nepean) and Pierre Poilievre (Nepean-Carleton), were at Algonquin College on Tuesday reminding students to cash in on the new tax breaks given to university and college students.

"This event is to remind Ottawa area students to keep their textbook receipts so they can take advantage of the new textbook tax credit, stated Pierre Poilievre. "Canada's New Government is dedicated to offering students assistance that they can count on, not only by helping out with tax deductions on books, but by also removing taxes from scholarships, fellowships and bursaries completely."

The textbook tax credit amounts to $65 for each month of full-time post -secondary study and $20 for each month of part-time secondary study. A full-time student enrolled for eight months will qualify for a textbook tax credit amount of $520 for the year, representing a tax reduction of about $80.

John Baird added, "Students represent the next generation of the work force and our government recognizes the importance of helping them reach their goals. These measures will help foster academic excellence by providing tax relief to more than 100,000 post secondary students. This good news is accompanied by the reduction of the GST from 7% to 6%, something students and their families can really count on."

Tax relief is part of the commitments made in the Budget 2006 which fully exempted these sources of income and expenses from tax, effective starting 2006.
